School Schedule

Our gates open at 7:50 a.m. Students may enter the basement at this time, secure their lunch tickets and sit in their class area. No student, except those enrolled in the Dibert Child Care Program, should be in the building or on the school grounds before this time. For his/her own safety, please make certain that your child arrives at school after 7:50 a.m. or is registered in the Dibert Child Care Program. Morning Meeting begins at 8:10 a.m. and students are marked tardy after this time.

Our dismissal is at 3:00 p.m. (1:20 p.m. on Thursdays). Students should clear the school grounds by 3:15 p.m. (1:35 p.m. on Thursdays). Students waiting for a ride will be allowed to remain inside one of the school gates until they are picked up. Parents are expected to make arrangements to have their children picked up from school soon after the dismissal bell. Students who are not picked up by 3:15 p.m. (1:35 on Thursdays) will be placed in the Dibert Child Care Program and an appropriate fee will be assessed. Students are not allowed to play on the playground equipment at the end of the day because there is no adult supervision at this time.

When picking up your child, designate a spot to meet him/her. Please do not double park or block the crossing areas as this creates an extremely dangerous situation for the children. Please do not park in the no parking zone in the rear of the school. Make a plan with your child for rainy days and let the teacher know the plan so that we can all be prepared.

Arrival At School

Please remember that the basement is not open for students until 7:50 a.m. Students should not be arriving at school before 7:50 a.m. unless they are enrolled in the Morning ADEPT Program. Parents are responsible for making sure that their children are delivered into the school basement. This is especially important with our younger children. This is a serious safety concern.

Building Safety and Security

As most of you are aware, a major goal for the New Orleans Public Schools is to make each school is a safe and happy place for children to learn. In this spirit I am reminding you of the following safety measures:

Class Fees

Each student will be assessed a class fee of $50.00. This fee will pay the cost of workbooks, instructional and art supplies, cultural resource programs, etc. A more detailed breakdown of the use of these fees will be sent home to you by your child's teacher during the first week of school.

CWAS In-District Registration and Sibling Registration

Students who will be attending Dibert for the first time next school year and who reside within the Dibert Attendance District must register before March 15th. No district registrations will be accepted after March 15th. Students who will be attending Dibert for the first time next school year and who have a brother or sister currently attending Dibert must register before March 15th. No sibling registrations will be accepted after March 15th.

DCA Budget

A copy of the DCA Budgetr is printed in the Parent Bulletin at the beginning of each school year. Please take time to review the budget and if you have any questions please see me or a member of the DCA Board.

DCA General Meeting

Our general membership meetings of the Dibert Community Association are held on the second Wednesday of each month. Did you know that we provide free baby-sitting? That's right, if you would like to join us but are wondering what to do about the kids, bring them with you and take advantage of our baby-sitting service. Our meetings are always interesting and informative so I hope you will make time to join us.

Dibert Book Fair

Our annual Book Fair is scheduled in the Fall of each school year. Flyers with a list of books and other information will be sent home with each child. This is your opportunity to purchase some excellent books for your child and to support our school library.

Dibert Child Care Program

The Dibert Child Care Program, sometimes called the ADEPT Program is available to all of our Dibert families. This program begins at 7:00 a.m. before school and ends at 6:00 p.m. after school. The program is staffed by certified teachers and assistants. There is daily homework assistance, enrichment activities and supervised play time. Where else can you find before and after school care for your child supervised by certified teachers for an average cost of $3.00 per day? For more information about this program please speak with one of the staff either before or after school.

Double Parking

Please take the time to park your car and make certain that your child is safely delivered and picked up from school. This is especially important on rainy days. The time you save is not worth the life of a child. I will be requesting that the New Orleans Police Department assist us in correcting any double parking problems.

I am requesting that everyone follow these simple rule:

Dress Code

We have a Student Dress Code for the New Orleans Public Schools.

All students are expected to dress appropriately for school and according to this dress code.

Field Day

Our annual Field Day will be held at the end of each school year. This is a day for the whole school to participate in sports, games and many fun activities at City Park. Parents are welcome to join us. Bring a picnic lunch and join in the festivities. Remember that this is a school function and that no alcoholic beverages of any kind are allowed.

Holiday Food Drive

The Dibert Student Council sponsors our annual Holiday Food Drive through The Little Sisters of the Poor. Please help by donating can goods and other non-perishable items. Your assistance in helping those in need during the Holiday Season is greatly appreciated.

Labeling Clothing

Each year we collect many lost coats, sweaters, jackets, etc. Please remember to place your childŐs name on these items so that we can easily return them. At the end each school year we send dozens of pieces of winter clothing to Good Will because they are not claimed from Lost and Found.

Medication

No medication may be administered by teachers and other staff members unless they have been specifically trained. Children may not self-administer medication. Topical medications may not be applied to student injuries at school, only water and band-aids will be applied. Effectively what these state guidelines mean is that no medication of any kind should be brought to school by students unless their parent has completed the appropriate medication form. These forms can be obtained from the office.

Open House

Our annual Open House night is scheduled at the beginning of each school year. Please make time to join us for this important meeting. You will have an opportunity to hear your child's teacher discuss the procedures used in her/his class, homework policy, discipline procedures and many other important topics. Remember the purpose of Open House is to allow the teacher an opportunity to describe the essential elements of her/his program. If you would like to discuss the individual progress of your child, please make an appointment to see the teacher at another time.

Open House Schedule

Parent Visits

Parents are always welcome to visit our school at any time. However, we request that you enter the building through the front door and take the time to come to the office and sign the Visitors Register and receive a Visitors Badge. Our goal is to insure that our building is always safe and secure and that no unauthorized persons are in the building at any time. Your concern and involvement in your child's education is of primary importance to all of the staff at our school. It is in this spirit that I am requesting that we avoid conferences at the teacher's classroom door. Your child's teacher cannot give you his/her complete and undivided attention while monitoring the children in the classroom. It is often inappropriate to discuss your child's progress in front of other children as well. We consider instructional time as sacred and attempt to avoid any interruptions to the children's learning. If you wish to make an appointment with a teacher, send a note with your child or call the office and leave a message.

Parent Volunteers

We greatly appreciate our many parent volunteers. Your help makes it possible for us to enrich our childrenŐs educations with activities that would be impossible without you. The Louisiana Legislature Child Protection Act requires the screening of all school volunteers. If you plan on volunteering to help in the classroom, the office or on field trips please complete the NOPD Screening Form and give it to your childŐs teacher. Thank you in advance for helping to make our school a safe and productive place for all of our students.

The Rainbow Connection

Each week the teacher will indicate if your child has made his/her Rainbow Connection by placing a stamp on the cloud at the upper right hand corner of this bulletin. Please make it a part of your routine on Friday to ask your child for the Parent Bulletin and check to see if he/she has made the Rainbow Connection for the week.

The Rainbow Connection Goals:

Sunship Earth Program

Sunship Earth is an exemplary earth education program that our 5th graders participate in each year. 4th grade parents can initiate a savings account process to cover the costs. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 10, 1999.

Superintendent's Academic Awards Ceremony

The Annual SuperintendentŐs AcademicŐs Awards Program for Area 1 schools is held at the end of each school year in the Keifer-UNO Lakefront Arena. Congratulations to all of our students who maintained a 3.75 average in their promotional subjects. A list of participating students is published in the Parent Bulletin each year.

Tardy Policy & Attendance

Students are tardy to school after the first bell at 8:10 a.m. Tardy students must enter the building through the front door and receive a tardy pass. Five (5) tardies will result in a detention, ten (10) times tardy will require a parent conference. Continued excessive late arrivals may result in your being asked to register your child in his/her district school. Please help teach our children that getting to school or work on time is a life long responsibility.

According to Title 17, Section 221 of the Louisiana Revised Statues, all school age children must attend school. Every parent must assure attendance of their child in school. If your child is absent, a note from you indicating the reason is required. If your child is absent for more than three consecutive days a note from your doctor is required. If you fail to send a note the absence is counted as unexcused. Excessive absences can result in parent conferences, retention, request to attend the district school, and referral to Municipal Court.

Testing Information

LEAP 2000 Testing - The Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) test will be administered to 4th graders. This test is required by the State Department of Education and will determine whether a student is eligible for promotion.

Iowa Test of Basic Skills - The ITBS is a norm referenced tests that will compare studentŐs performance with others from around the country. Students in the 3rd, 5th and 6th grades are required to take the ITBS by the State Department of Education.

Help Your Child Prepare for Testing - As a parent you can help your child prepare both mentally and physically for testing. You can help your child by making sure that he/she:

Tardiness During Testing - Students will not be allowed to begin testing late. If a students arrives at school after testing has begun, he/she will be required to remain in the office until the next sub-test begins. The missed test will have to be made up . Please make every effort to insure that your child is in school on time.

Textbooks

Please be aware that each student and his/her parents is responsible for all textbooks issued. All textbooks should be covered. If a textbook is damaged or lost it is the responsibility of the parent to pay the cost for replacement.
